Upgrading from Vista to XP

pceye

the big points were that MS totally ripped off spot light and widgets from OS X. OS X has had them for over a year before vista ever even came out. Stickies were in the Classic Mac OS, so they have had those types of things for many years.

I don't blame MS because they are great tools for those who don't organize their data.

The thing that caught notice here was the MS inclusion of the memtest tool rather then tossing their own memdiag crap they had for some time in. Seeing that as an option was good news for Vista users there since that's a high rated memory diagnostic tool.

I'm not surprized at seeing them borrow ideas from other OSs like the OS X since they wanted to improve the "image" of the new Windows while lacking in other areas! But with any new version they come out with there is always complaints to go along with any favorable items a newer version offers.

This is nothing new, MS has purchased Linux based companies and even used open source code in their products.

You know this only holds true with Microsoft. You never hear anyone in masses complaining about speed, overall performance or compatibility with any other OS like Unix, Linux, OS X, etc, like you do with Microsoft. Most people will say that is because there are more users, which is a fact, there are more windows users, but that doesn't make it better.

XP was a huge improvement over their previous OSes, and Vista is just a disappointment. Everything from how they marketed it, and to how crappy it performs. Where as, my 3 year old PC can run any Linux distro out there and even the newest ones no problem, and my 3 year old Mac desktop, heck my 4 year old mac desktop can run OS X 10.5 with really no issues or major performance hits at all.

I really hope they fix all these issues with Vienna, and toss in EFI support, the new file system support like ZFS, and fix the terrible I/O performance that windows has always had. I also hope they don't feature limit with tons of different versions, just make one OS, that really gets on my nerves. Once you start to feature limit something, you get nickeled and dimed to get what you really need, or there is one feature you needed but didn't know at the time.

You'll know soon enough about Vienna or better known as Windows Server 2008. The next desktop version isn't due out until ... what 2009 or 2010. The main reason why XP was an improvement over older versions like the ME flop as well as the 9X family besides the initial move upto 32bit seen with 98 was the inclusion of the NT core on the native NTFS partition type over the Fat dos type. That and seeing the desktop load up ffaster then any previous version.

Each version still has it's own setbacks with XP having seen plenty of bugs until after the SP2 release. Even the service pack could cause problems for some when installed. As for Linux on the other hand that's still based on the old UNIX platform to the greatest extent.

It's benefactor seen there is being an open source OS where you can see various changes with each "flavor of the month" as one writer termed it. You complain about Vista useing more memory while forgetting that XP uses more then previous versions as well. 98 had the 512mb barrier of it's own to contend with.

Plus people expect to be able to do more with each new version meaning adding more features into it. Now combine that with MS trying to keep up with the rapid changes seen in hardwares since XP first came out. The main problem with MS being sssslowww as well as not getting it right the first time. "update please... next service pack onhold"

Oh, there goes an original comment!

Of course MS bought up any "open source" they could since that competes with their monopoly on things. :P They're going to watch what someone else comes up with and then throw into their own mix(or mixup  ).
