Upgrading from x300

Hey,
I'm upgrading a pci-express x16 x300SE ATI card to whatever I can get that will keep my total cost down. I am also buying 2gb of ram for 144 dollars from newegg so combined with that I don't want to go over 400 at max really.

I don't have preferences really but I have been looking at the 7800 obviously and the 6800 series as well as the x800 and x850's .. all of the postscripts have me somewhat confused so any insight would be appreciated.

you really dont need anything more than 1.5GB, but with either of those cards it will run it on highest settings at high framerates.

i heard that 2.5 gb will really help over 1.5 (i'm upping from 512 which will remain in there)
Which one of those two would you recommend more?

No game uses over 2GB of ram, and you will only notice an improvement in some games with 2GB instead of 1GB. I'd say that 1.5GB is plenty for now, in terms of gaming.

Battlefield 2 is really the only game that you will see a great benefit from 2GB of RAM. However, games are advancing quickly and 2GB might help for the future.

2GB sure, but deffinetly not 2.5GB.

well I am still looking, the 6800GS seems like a viable alternative, pretty cheap. The X800XL compares worse for some reason even though it is technically better specs just lower scores.

Basically I think it's either I go with something like a 6800GS or bite the bullet and buy something ridiculous like the 7800.
