upgrading memory

I'm thinking of upgrading my memory on my Compaq Desktop PC. Supposedly in the "system info" it says that it's a 2.2 GHZ Athlon 3500+ computer, 80 gb hd, and 448 of RAM, and it is running on Windows XP media center edition.

I was wondering what RAM should I buy since I'm not really familiar with my computer.
 
So how many of those things should i get? I never installed RAM before. Would the computer automatically detect new memory? I'm thinking of upgrading to 2 GB. Thanks for any input.


doesn't matter what type of brand I get? Low density, High density? Which products do you recommend. Send me links please :)

Don't get high density. You can use any brand, I'd suggest buying some brands value RAM as getting premium RAM is semi pointless with an OEM BIOS.

It's probably cheaper to just get 2 1GB sticks in then you can get rid of the 512MB you already have. I wouldn't add them as you would lose dual channel.

Cool. Would I need to do any tweaking before installing them? So, I just get my screwdriver and unlock my computer. Take out the existing 512 mb, and then insert the 2 1 gb memory sticks? Is installing and taking out memory easy?

Yep that's it. It's fairly easy, just push the white tabs out and the RAM will come out, then press the new RAM in. If it doesn't fit, it's backwards. You know it's in when the white tabs lock in place.
