Upgrading memory

I was just informed that upgrading the RAM for my DDR3 system would cause my computer to be unstable. He said that if I wanted 2GB, I would buy 1 2GB stick. If I wanted 4GB, I would have to buy a pair of 2x2GB sticks that are meant to be put into the system in a pair.

The problem is, I already have a 2GB stick and I want to upgrade to 4GB. Does this mean I have to ditch the 2GB stick and buy a pair of 2x2GB sticks in order to upgrade to 4GB? Or can I just buy the same exact stick of 2GB ram.

PS I have 4 slots for RAM.

Thanks.

No. :D

Just buy a 2GB stick and put it in the computer, and then you should have 4GB. It's considered optimal to install RAM in sets, but as long as the RAM you have in the computer and the RAM you are going to buy are the same types, then it will work fine. Who told you otherwise? Someone who stood to gain if you bought more?

Post back with your system specs, and I'll tell you which slots to install the RAM to. Cheers!

Actually no, I just bought the system from the guy and told him I was going to buy the ram elsewhere at another time. I'm still kind of confused, so if I buy this it would be the exact same as buying 2 of these?

Or is buying this better?

The guy said that if I wanted 4GB I would need to buy a pair of 2x2GB dual channel or the system would be unstable and blue screen.

Also, all the memory that I see for dual channel says for i5 which I don't have. What do you recommend I purchase if I want 4GB of RAM?

Major fail on that advice. You don't need to actually buy 2 of the same chips to get dual channel. If the same stick of memory you have is still available elsewhere, then thats all you need. If not, then just find memory that has the same speed and timings as your original. What memory stick do you have now? Do you have the model number handy?

Would that be the same as buying good dual channel memory?

The guy said that it has to come from the same batch of mfg (aka dual channel)

Idk what that means...

No, you don't have to buy an actual dual channel package. Since you already have a 2gb stick, just buy another one just like it and it will be in dual channel.

Do I need an antistatic wristband or anything to install the ram? Maybe you guys know a good link that lets me know everything I need to do to install the ram.

Thank you.

Just touch the computer case before installing the RAM. I've never fired a stick, though I'm sure it could happen.

I don't see why you couldn't just add a another 2GB stick and add it. I guess ill just have to leave to the experts.
