i have an amd duron 600mhz, i was thinking of getting a new motherboard & cpu package from tiger direct, but if i do, do i have to go through reinstalling windows xp?

Yes you will, anytime you change a major component such as the motherboard or hard drive, you need to reinstall windows.

now that i got that cleared up (Thankyou so much Omega)
should i go with intel or amd? any suggestions?
i've noticed that at the same price you get intels with 2.93ghz, while AMD is around 1.8ghz. i was thinking that amd since its more pricey

The answer to that question is based on what you will be doing with the computer. So, what will it be used for?

What kind of work? Like word and stuff, or what? If your doing a lot of gaming, you should get AMD, because AMD handles everything fine, in that situation. But if work to you is like big programs that use a lot of CPU activity, get an Intel with HT, or AMD X2.

There's a lot more to processors than just clock speed, what's your budget & what will it mainly be used for. Here's some things to look over:

Computer Spec 101
CPU 101
