Upgrading MOBO&CPU - Questions

Hey guys!

I built my computer 4 years ago and it needs some updates. It became fairly obvious when I was playing Wildstar this past weekend. Anyway!! I was thinking about upgrading my motherboard and CPU, since my mobo will only fit 1156.

I'm not sure where I stand with my graphics card. I have ATI Raedon 6970 HD. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on updates and I can do it in bits and pieces. I just feel like the CPU upgrade is more important right now.

Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz LGA 1156 95W is what I'm currently running with my setup.

I'm looking for a good upgrade. I'm open to advice!! Right now I'm leaning more toward these two upgrades.

Silly question, but do I need to purchase an entire new OS for a new MOBO?

Thanks guys!!

As far as the OS goes, it all depends on if you had the retail or OEM version of windows.

If you are gonna upgrade get a quad core processor, not a dual core. You have a quad core now, you don't want to downgrade to a dual core.

Get the I5-4670

Gothca. Any good MOBOS to fit well with that? Any trick to fiding out if I have OEM or retail version of windows?

Thanks a lot for the advice!

Any thoughts on whether I should consider a GPU upgrade?

What does your installation media look like? What type of case did it come in? Should basically say on the cover of the case or sleeve. Look on the cd key sticker it will list it as well.

I try to stay with Gigabyte on motherboards. What type of games do you play?

Mostly MMOs. I'm playing Wildstar which is the first game that I've ever felt is testing my computers capability.

Thanks again.

Those determine how your game's performance is. How long has it been since you reinstalled windows? If you find that you are having issues with games and you have decent enough specs to play then I would either look at updating your video card driver or possibly reinstalling windows as it slows down over time. Can I also ask what is the make and model of your power supply?

1000 watts is way overkill for that system. A good 600 watt unit would suffice.

I just wanted to make sure your power supply was able to push the video card.

I'm just not sure where I should spend my money for the upgrades. I'm guessing my CPU over my GPU. Wouldn't you think so?

You still have a good cpu, quad core 2.8 ghz and the game you play isn't very demanding so you should have no problems. Providing your system isn't bogged down with crap software or infected you should be fine with what you have.

I run general antivirus programs on it. Would you recommend me doing a clean install of windows?

What do you mean by general antivirus programs?

A general antivirus program won't catch a lot of the malware out today. A few other programs are needed. Go ahead and read the following and run the programs if you wish and post the logs so we can verify where you are at.

If the first 3 programs don't catch anything then don't run the 4th. Check to see what the date is on your video card driver.

Here is the latest driver for your card assuming you are running windows 7 64bit.

Do you run any type of temp file cleaner such as Ccleaner or TFC?

I just have Trend Micro. Thats all I use..

Never used a temp file cleaner.

You're awesome, by the way. Usually have to pay for this kind of help. :)

Here is the link to download TFC.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tfc/dl/92/

Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon.
When the program starts, click on the Start button. TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.
