Upgrading my computer

First, is a quad core really that much better then a dual core for gaming. I'm mainly upgrading for Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I've seen video benchmarks of my graphics card doing perfectly fine in that game, but they were all using quad cores. The one time I saw one with a dual core, he was lagging up a bit.

My Computer:

-AMD athlon 5200+ 2.71 Dual Core (this one I believe http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103210)
-2 GB Ram
-ATI Radeon 4670 1 GB IceQ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161287&cm_re=4670-_-14-161-287-_-Product)
Windows XP home
Motherboard: ASUS m3a78-t (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131331)

My other question: This should be compatible with my motherboard right? I have no idea what L2 or L3 means, but I think that the model is the same socket size. Also, if I get this and install it, will my 480w PSU handle everything?

You can use the 955. Current AM3 cpu's are backwards compatible with AM2+ motherboards.
 
I think I'll just stick with the 940. Anyways, any one have input on my other questions? Also, If I install that cpu, upgrade my RAM to 4 gb, buy a 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive, then why my 480 Watt PSU be able to keep up?
 
Also, I don't have any clue on how to update my bios, and I checked, I do indeed need to update my bios for it to support the CPU. I've only come upon tutorials requiring floppies, don't have a floppy drive in my computer.

you can use usb pen drive
 
Oh that's convenient. Do you mind walking me through? I know that if you mess up, it's incredibly hard, if impossible, to fix it, and you'll need a new motherboard. I have version 0204 right now I think, I want to update to 1801 which is the latest.
