Upgrading My Memory-

Ok, so i have a HP Pavilion a735w Desktop PC and i'm wanting to play some games with my friends from school and all but i don't even need to install the games first to now that they will run like crap. I'm looking to just upgrade my memory and graphics card (but i'll post about that in the correct section). This is what i'm stuck with right now...

Component ------------ Attributes
Ram (installed) --------- 512 MB (1X512MB)
Maximum allowed ------- 1 GB (2 x 512MB)
Speed supported ------- PC2700 MB/sec
Type ------------------ 184 pin, DDR1-333 SDRAM
DIMM slots ------------ Two
Open slots ------------ One available

So, i'm not COMPLETELY sure what i'm suppose to look for and i don't want to regret anything either. I know it HAS to be 184 pin, DDR SDRAM but does this mean i only need to get ONE and add that to my computer or get TWO and take out the existing one and add the new ones to my computer? Also, i'm deffinitely on a tight budget and don't need to spend a lot but i've been looking through (tigerdirect.com) and (newegg.com) and some of the prices either seem way to low like it's cheap stuff or way to high which i can't afford. Any thoughts... ideas?

Well the only real option you have is to get another 512MB stick. I would recommend something like this, it's only $31, and is exactly what you need.

It says DDR400, but it will slow down to DDR333 to match your current memory, and its cheaper then buying DDR333 memory (for some reason).

Wait, so would it be better to get 400 and have it slow down the 333 or better to get a matching 333?

The 400 is cheaper, so in this case yes. I don't know why the 400 is cheaper then the 333, but for some reason it is. Normally it wouldn't be. How much $ do you have for the upgrade? Cause you might want to get a decent motherboard.

Well because the ram is so cheap it really doesnt matter if its 30 or 40 dollars i just want whatever is going to run/work better.

A motherboard? Hmm... i have no clue what i would be looking for so i don't know about that one. Can you show me a couple that i can just swap out for the one in my computer now that are better?

Socket A mobos on newegg don't have many options. No support for PCI express x16, no DDR2 support, DDR only goes up to DDR 400, but they can support more ram, which is what you might want. They do have AGP, which I've heard is for GPUs. Not sure. But here is what you might want to look at:

There is a problem with getting a new mobo. You need to reinstall the OS, which could be annoying.

If you really have money to spend, you may even want to get a new CPU altogether. But just getting a new computer would probably be more worthwhile then that.

I think socket A CPUs for AMD is at the bottom of the CPU and mobo and RAM line. Depending on what games you play, you might be limited on how you play them.

Tough situation your in.

there may be a better socket a, but not by much. i think that proc would be decent for most games. the real problem is the integrated graphics. complete crap. but, you have an agp slot, so there is margional hope. at this point any graphics card would be better.

Yeah, i really don't think i want to get a new motherboard if it's not going to do as much as it would because of the fact that i'm not getting a better CPU. Also, yes i am getting a better graphics card too i posted about that HERE but i'm still not sure which one i'm looking to get.
