upgrading my xeons

I was looking to maybe upgrade my mac pro in the next year - primarally get my hands on the 3.0ghz woodcrests (I have the 2.0ghz ones).

I get most of my stuff from scan.co.uk, always happy to have stuff returned (for when I spill another beer over everything), anyways, £550 each. So to upgrade my cpu's I'd spend £1100. $2000. ****ing hell! Won't be doing that anytime soon then! This totally surprised me, but other sites seem to back it up... I'm shocked!

So, eh, anyone got a couple of them for about 100 quid!?!?

Would a quad be considerably faster than 2, 2.0/3.0ghz duals though? It's not like I'm in a huge hurry to upgrade, video card and ram have priority anyways.

If prices don't move much I'll probably just leave it for the next 2-3 years I guess, by then I'll have the money to do something interesting...

what is the main task of this computer? Upgrading may not be a vialbe solution if you want to stay with Xeons. Depending on its use depends on whether or not you would benefit more from running Xeons.

Well it does a bit of everything. I like to play games quite often, although it's the playing of the game I enjoy, not the graphics. I use photoshop, but not effectively enough to tax the computer. Mostly I use it for audio, and I use a shit load of plugins which really eat up the cpus.

the lot. 40+ tracks in protools, levels, effects (reverbs, compressors, blah blah), you name it, all automated, plus whatever samples I have running (usually shit loads, Reason, Sampletank), then mastered in wavelab

Yeah you definitely want to stick to xeons then....

I would watch the market and wait for next gen to come out and knock down the price of current gens, be a more viable upgrade. Unless you have the money now to just spend.
