upgrading old computer

i got my hands on a old pentium 3 computer. I am going to give it to my cousins so they have something to do homework on maybe go online thats it. I was lookign at just throwing in a new motherboard and cpu maybe 1gb of ram thats about it, any cheap suggestions, maybe combo deal or something
 
how old are your cousins. and what exactly will they use this computer for?
how much ram in it now?

i'm only asking because, before i turned mine into a server, it was a family computer (2 adults, 2 children).

those java games run really slow on pentium 3s.
ms office 2003 runs ok.

um they are older 14 16 and 18 but all they need it for is for school like writing papers maybe going online for research and small things like that i doubt they would play any games or watch movies or anything. I put a fresh install of xp on it to see how it would handle and it doesnt do too bad but i figured something little newer would last them a little longer and get them through high school
 
im not gonna spend the money on a netbook for them, just figured since i had the computer already i could maybe throw an amd dual core and new motherboard some ram for like 150, doesnt have to be amazing just something they can use without having to worry about it dying on them
 
thats exatly what i was thnking about doing. its a full size case the thing is massive. That is a really good deal thank you
