Upgrading Plus Raid5 and some questions

Hi there -

This is part upgrade, part (potential) troubleshooting, and part rescue operation - I hope this is the right forum section.

Background: Computer stopped working - try to power, power goes on for a second or two starting fans, and quits. No screens - never gets near that far.

Replaced out the power supply (Antec 500W) with a 750W (already thinking upgrade at that point) with no change. Power on - a second later it's off, dead in the water.

No specific culprit was obvious (nothing burned or melted or unseated) so rather than buying random parts trying to chase it down, I decided to upgrade - last computer built in early 2005 so it was time, anyway.

Here's the tricky issue(s):

Dead computer was running SATA Raid 5 on WinXP SP3.

Plan (already in motion, new MOBO ordered) is to replace with new MOBO - ASUS P6x58d-e - taking advantage of the Intel core i7 90X extreme edition gulftown 3.33 ghz (serious upgrade) and (very hopefully), after configuring the bios on the new MOBO, to boot off the Raid (this is what I was booting from before), and have that Raid up and running.

Essentially I'm hoping to take a raid from one system and plug it into another (lot more powerful) system and expecting (really hoping) the new system to go, "Oh, I'm booting from this location (for the first time ever) - here you go, Sir!""

Is such a scenario possible?

Next - I have a ATA 250g drive I was using for some file backups and archiving on the dead computer which was running via IDE to the old MOBO.

The new Asus MOBO doesn't have IDE so the "plan" here is to try a IDE-SATA converter I found on newegg real cheap for that - just hope it works.

So, what I'm hoping for is this:

1) I get computer booting from RAID, all info there as before so I can proceed to . . .

2) Getting the IDE ATA 250g recognized so I can . . .

3) Make some final backups from the Raid to the IDE ATA before I . . .

4) Nuke the Raid by installing Windows 7 and start fresh with a new, clean RAID for the new OS and then ...

5) EITHER continue to use the 250g ATA IDE for extra storage or at very least, backup what I need to backup from that drive to the fresh, clean RAID on the new OS and then replace with a SATA drive for backup and or archiving.

I am seeking to have a RAID 5 which worked on a past system working on new system, boot from it as it was configured to and of course, be able to access the data on it.

I am also seeking to have this ATA 250g drive via IDE converted to SATA connection accessible hopefully before or ultimately after the new OS gets installed.

I hope all that makes sense and sorry for the huge description - I appreciate any insight - thanks!

Oh, and for anyone wondering about equipment:

Old (dead?) MOBO: Gigabyte ga-8n-SLI Pro
OS - Windows XP SP3
GPU - EVGA NVidia 7800 GT
Mem: 4 gig (3 used) DDR2
Raid 5 - 4 Seagate Barracudas SATA 300G's (0,1,2,3) - 875G total
BU Drive - Seagate 250G ATA IDE

(any guesses as to what died on the old computer? I'm clueless.)

New stuff:

new MOBO: ASUS P6x58d-e
new CPU: Intel core i7 90X extreme edition gulftown 3.33 ghz
new OS: Windows 7
new GPU (old GPU for now - haven't thought it that far yet - and the new CPU was expensivo!)
new Mem: DDR3 4 gigs (3 while XP is running IF I get XP from the RAID running) and ultimately a LOT more once Windows 7 gets loaded.

You won't be able to boot on the new system without reinstalling. It's a completely different chipset and Windows won't recognize it.

You should be able to set up the RAID array on the new mobo, however. From there, use a Linux live disk to get your files.

Thanks for the info - at least I can be more realistic on expectations.

Just did some reading so I'm editing my message which was basically "Huhhhh? Duhhhhh!"

Okay - based on what little I've read,

I would create a live disk (looking at Ubuntu right now), start up the system with the disk in the drive which will ultimately get me to screens and menus to rescue the files which need rescuing.

Is that basically it or am I missing something?
