Upgrading Processor: Fill me in on Stepping?

I have an Asus IPILP-LC (Lancaster8) motherboard. The highest processor it supports till is the E4400. I'm currently using Pentium D915.

On processor finder on the intel page, it shows me 2 specs # when I put in E4400: SLA3F and SLA98. CPU speed, Bus Speed, both 65nm and the only thing different is the stepping.

One's L2, and the other M0.

Can someone fill me in on that?
I've also seen other different steppings like G1, C1, B2, E0.

Thanks!

Processor stepping changes things like power usage, overclocking ability and temperatures. not directly related to performance, at stock speeds they will perform exactly the same.

With intel and amd, the newest stepping generally has less power consumption, lower temperatures and higher overclocking ability.

I'm not looking to overclock and I'm torn apart choosing the Phenom II 925 and the 955.

I mean I'm sure 0.2GHz isn't gonna make any difference but what is the real difference between the processors within their own family?

Not really. if you are not overclocking the only difference you will see with newer stepping is a slightly lower power bill.

LearningBunny if you are interested I am selling my Phenom II 940 Quad-Core processor for only $120. It is in great working condition and I have only been using it for a few months.

The only reason I am selling it is I want a 95 Watt processor and the Phenom II 940 is a 125 Watt processor.

I'm looking for a 95W too. :) and thank you for the offer.
I've been reading up on wiki and saw difference. I'm trying to find a decent build but it seems like most people are talking about overclocking. I'm not looking to overclock at all really. I just want a good decent computer with occasional gaming. :(

I can't PM you just yet on this forum.
