upgrading processor

Ok guys. Here it is. What I have is an older laptop. It has a 900mhz processor, 256mb RAM, and a 20GB hdd. As you can tell from the title, I wanna upgrade this bad boy (I know you are all jealous that I have it and not you) . The processor in it now is a Socket A Duron. I'm looking on fleaBay and I see all these processors. Some are Durons, but most are XP's. The XP catches my attention most and is probably the one I will get. The only thing is, I dont know exactly what to get. I think my RAM is 133MHz FSB. I'm not sure what the cpu is. What FSB processor should I get. Also if anyone wants to recommend a specific processor, I would appreciate that. Thanks for the help.

If I were you I would ditch it and buy a new one all together

The price of cheap new parts is less then older parts, such as SDRAM and Socket A CPU's.

the laptop was given to me. i dont have the money to buy a new one. i was gonna get people that wanna buy me christmas presents to buy individual pieces for me.

Upgrading a laptop is even harder, generally you can only upgrade the RAM or hard drive. Some processors are built onto the motherboard, as well as the GPU, so those may be unremovable.

i opened it up last night and it seemed like it could be removed. it had one of those off-white colored things that desktop mobos have. it had screws holding a bracket that was holding the cpu down so i dont think it is built in. i will take the bracket off tonight ( i didnt have the tools necessary to do it last night) and see if it is built in. but... in the mean time if it isnt built in, what type of processor would i need? thanks for the help.

Download and run cpu-z, it should tell you specs of the processor and motherboard, and what socket it's using.

yes, and then google the motherboard manufacturer and model... it should show supported upgrades, if any...

Like the others said, it probably cant be upgraded. Most laptops dont have CPU's that are upgradeable, although I have seen some older Dell's that were! But you can probably sell the laptop as is on ebay and put that money to something newer and faster and it shouldn't even cost you that much. You have to ask yourself if the price in parts are worth the performance.

Sometimes it's just more practical to buy a new one.

Basically no older laptops allow upgrades beyond RAM and HD's as mentioned. And should you be able to, I'm quite sure you'd be limited to the Pentium III series and nothing more(well, Celerons )
