Upgrading RAM

So right now I have 1GB of RAM on my computer (Vista 32-bit) and I need more. Right now the RAM sticks are in this order:
Memory bay 1: 512MB
Memory bay 2: 512MB
Memory bay 3: 0MB
Memory bay 4: 0MB

So I'm thinking of bringing it up to the max memory allowed (3GB) and was wondering what memory I should get and most importantly in what order should I place them in the bay?

P.S, I have an Asus motherboard and the current RAM is 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM PC2-4200.

If there are two different color slots for the ram. Than the 2 512's should be in one color. And the 2x1GB should be in the other.

I've found that your motherboard can support PC-6400 RAM. I'd suggest getting 2GB, or even 4GB of that stuff, and just dumping the original 512 sticks. Its much faster than what you currently have.

Thanks a ton, your helping me out a lot.

Another question. I just opened the case and there is 2 colors (never notced that haha) and the 2 512MB sticks are both in the blue slots. Say tomorrow I go ahead and purchase 2GB of new memory should I keep the existing 1GB and make it a total of 3GB or ditch the old sticks and go for higher performing 2GB memory?

Double check and make sure that motherboard you posted earlier is the one you have. If so I'd say ditch the old stuff and get 2GB or 4GB or higher performance RAM (800 MHz). The two different colors means that your motherboard supports dual channel RAM. Right now your 512's are in dual channel mode since they are in the same color slots.

Yes, but if you purchase the 800 MHz RAM it will be clocked down to the 533 MHz, which is the speed of the 512's. Which is why I say just get new RAM all together.

Alright, makes perfect sense now. Thank you very much, I've been looking for answers like this for a while now but no one has helped me.
Now I head and and get some 2x1GB 240-pin PC-6400 RAM. Wooh!

Wait, where did you find out that it can support PC-6400 RAM? As far as I can see it only takes PC-4200??:confused:

Alright sick.. So i'll go pick up PC-6400 RAM, I'll get 2 sticks of 1GB
Is it possible to get 3 sticks of 1GB? Even though it will only fill 3/4 ports
