My setup is in my sig.

Heres what i want to upgrade to...

-GTX280
-4GB PC8500 Ram DDr2

Heres my ?'s

1.Should i replace my Mobo with an Asus X38 that has PCI-e 2.0? (is the 2.0 make a big performance difference versus PCI-e 1.1 x16)

2.Should i Keep my PC6400 Ram and add 1 more gb or upgrade to the pc8500

3. Is my P/S big enough for the GTX280

4.Should i go with and ati mobo and get a 4870x2?

5. is my my q6600 OC'd at 3.1 enough to not bottleneck the gtx280 or 4870x2

Reason for all the questions, if i dont have to upgrade my mobo or powersupply or ram, im gonna get a different case and another hard drive.
thanks in advance.

First off, nice pick :D secondly, if you have the money, get the new mobo. You can also sell the old one, don't forget. As for the RAM, since it would be SO much cheaper, I would keep the old RAM.

PSU can probably handle it, although it wouldn't hurt to get a better one, like a 750. I don't think that your CPU will bottleneck you.

No, I think the 680i is fine and the performance increase from 1.1 to 2.0 is negligible.

Honestly, I'd just add another gig. DDR2 800 is fine.

Yes. It will also handle the 4870X2.

If you want the 4870x2, then some would say it would make sense to go with an Intel based motherboard chipset, mainly for the ability to Crossfire another Radeon card in the future. The X2 will work with the 680i, however.

I'd say add another gig of DDR2 800, if you want, and keep the rest of the components, regardless of your GPU choice.

well i decided to go with the gtx280. ill just keep all of my hardware add a gb of ram and an extra hard drive since mine is 22gb away from being full. ill eventually get that "turbine" case that has a huge 250mm fan one the front and side, till then ill replace all mycase fans with high cfm ones. i have a 19' flat screen, hopefully i can max out crysis on it with the gtx.. i hear of ppl maxing it out with 1920x1200 reso with like 16XAA, but well see. but ill prolly order the card here in a few weeks and hopefully by feb ill add another gtx280 and sli them and get a kw PS. what u guys think about that??

Yeah, you could do that, but I don't see the need for another 280 with a 19" monitor. What's the native res, 1440x900? One GTX 280 should be able to handle any game reasonably well.

ok kool, that saves me 400 bucks and anohter 250 for the monitor lol.. so would get better performance running a smaller moniotr like my 19'' and yes the native reso is 1440x900 and using AA, or using a bigger monitor like a 24'' with 1920x1200 with no aa? AA just smooths out jaggies correct?

i have a thing with knowing i got the best of something out lol.... at the time i built my PC it was pretty top notch...not so much n e more though.. but back to the monitor question
:)

Keep the 19" if you have NO AA, it just don't look as nice! Oh, and we have the same ram. or at least I have 2GB of the same RAM, corsair XMS2. my timing is 5-5-5-5-12. whats yours?
