Hi guys. I put vista on my system about a year and a half ago but it was 32bit can I upgrade to 64bit or do I have to go buy a whole new package and is it worth it with the new release by Microsoft? Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can get an upgrade pack for it. Not sure on what packages are available now.
And I'd only switch to x64 if your computer has 4GB or more of RAM, or you will be upgrading it to that.

Thanks CD. Iam running 4GB at the moment and the system seems to recognise it but I wanted to switch to 8GB so will prob def need the 64bit for this I figure?

Yeah, x64 will utilize it better. And I thought the 32-bit only recognized less than 4GB?
But it it recognizes 4, then I think that is the limit of it.
Regardless, x64 would be a smarter choice to upgrade to.

Well, your statement implies one of two things. Either you think that you need 4GB of RAM to effectively run Vista 64-bit, or you think that the only benefit of using a 64-bit OS is increased maximum RAM.

That's a fair point. In my opinion, addressing more RAM is probably the least important reason to switch to a 64 bit O/S. The major reason is to compute faster. A longer word length makes calculations significantly faster. The only applications I've ever encountered that need memory beyond 4GB are servers and they don't run Vista or XP.

And he's right. You don't need 4 GB to run any microsoft operating system effectively. XP runs like a champ on 1 GB and Vista on 2 GB.
