Upgrading to new CPU

I don't know if this is the right forums to be asking but i'll ask anyway. I very much want to upgrade to a new CPU. I play this massive online game and it just runs so bad. My current CPU is 1.3 ghz Intel Pentium 4. I was wondering if there is any chance of being able to get a new CPU safely and with out ruining my PC. I wouldn't know how to go and install it , but i can buy a recommended CPU to purchase and have a friend here install it for me. I just need some guidance here if possible.

Sure, you can upgrade your proc... but what about the other parts of your system? How much RAM do you have? and what video card? Those might impact your game more than upgrading the proc!

Im looking for smooth play since im a huge gamer. BUt i haven't been getting that. This is the first time i've thought about wanting to upgrade to a new CPU. But there are so many dangers and ways to wreck the PC :mad: :confused: :eek: !

Call up hp and ask how far you can upgrade it to, they should know. Maybe you want to get a new graphics card also, Maybe a 5700 LE or something?
 
Well the last S423 chip Intel made was the Willamette 2.0Ghz chip after which they shifted to S478 (although they make convertors like this)
 
Well it might be a bit of a bottleneck in games, having a powerful CPU and a crappy graphics card isn't really the best combination in terms of performance. I know, kinda.
