I want to upgrade a Windows XP Home edition laptop, to Windows XP Proffesional. I have an OEM disk, and licence key, but if i do install Pro on the same partition that Home is on, will i recive a clean install, or an upgrade?

Dont want to mess up, as I am upgrading for a friend.

Thanks
Adam

You would do a full reinstall, I believe. You sure you have an upgrade disk, or do you have a full version?

Either way, just insert the CD when booting, (make sure that it is set to boot from the CD in the BIOS) and go from there.

No, i have the full version on an OEM disk.

Will upgrading from this type of disk erase all of the files curently on the laptop?

Even if it wouldn't, still back up his computer. It is best to format the hard drive and start over every while. Starting fresh gives an old computer new life.

There should be no difference between an OEM and retail version of the disk besides packaging. The whole point of upgrading is to keep your original files, so there shouldn't be a problem if you do an upgrade. However, I've run into some pretty serious issues while trying to upgrade. I strongly advise in a clean install if at all possible.

If you upgrade all your files should still be there, but something could go wrong, so always backup your data first.
