UPnP question...

I'm looking into how to make XP Pro SP 2 as secure as possible, and google searches have turned up suggestions to disable/uninstall various features like UPnP. My question is if turn off UPnP, how will this affect 'plug-and play', and my using a hardware firewall (router with NAT/SPI)? Thanks.

UPnP is a network protocol, it will not affect things like flash drives, cd's etc. If you turn off UPnP on one computer it will not affect the entire network. Disable it from the router and it will.

To make your computer as secure as possibly I would recommend getting XP SP3 at minimum. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have significantly improved security and networking features.

So there will only be one PC on the router (I'm just using it as hardware firewall to add to software firewall). Not sure if the two printers will plug into the PC or into the router. So I can disable it just from the PC. Is that enough to get a security boost? Cannot stand Vista or Windows 7....Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD, anything but those two. Looked into SP3, but it appears to have even more noxious DRM, COPP, or whatever than SP2. Unless/until I can find way to disable the nasty stuff, I must settle for SP2, which is why I'm researching ways to make it as secure as possible.
