I am working on a computer and it will not boot up.

When I try to turn it on, it goes to the normal Windows XP Home Edition startup screen, then it asks me if I want to scan the FAT 32 file system for errors. If I let it go or press any key to cancel it, no matter what this message comes up:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SysytemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: *Then it counts up to 100*

What is wrong and how can I fix this??

URGENT Help is Needed!!!

Thanks for anyone who knows this!!!!!! :D

Try using the windows install disk and running the repair, or using the boot menu and selecting "Last known good configuration"

I tried the "Last known good config" but that doesn't help...I haven't tried the repair yet, but what would that do?? Because I need to save every single thing on the Harddrive.... ;)

Okay, I tried to reset the BIOS....Nothing.
I put in the Windows XP Home Disk, booted from it, and pressed R to Repair. Does all this sound correct? After I am in the Repair screen (which seems like the Command Prompt) what am I supposed to do??

Or is there another way to repair Windows automatically without erasing the HDD?

Please Help...

I got the computer to atleast get past that screen and I can now log on. Although...explorer.exe does not start up with the computer. The only thing I can do is press Ctrl+Alt+Del, but when I try to run a new task and run explorer.exe it pops up in the processes for a second and then goes away. All I see is my desktop with no icons or start menu or anything.

How do you think I can get explorer.exe to run?

A repair install is performed after you go past the option to press the "R" key for the recovery console. That is the command prompt you reached there. Once you reach the choice to go there or install Windows now by pressing the enter key the installer will prompt you about repairing the current installation detected on the drive. The best instructions for performing this are given in detail at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

The specific error seen identifies either a problem the drive itself or the partition information on the drive was somehow damaged. The link here will explain how to use the recover console to deterime if the drive is failing or system files have some how been damage or deleted. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830084

I got help from another site where somebody told me to just put the HDD in another computer.

I am copying all of the files right now to my good computer. Good thing it's only 15gb, I can burn that to 4 DVD's, no problem. Now all I gotta do is reformat and install all my shit again.

Thanks to everyone who helped me on this, I really appreciate the help. Seriously.
