Urgent help needed, (sorry about the life story LOL)

Over the past weeks and months, ive been talking with my parents (I'm 16) about getting a new PC. I suggested building one, and we spet a long time thinking about it. The problem is, my dad seems to insist that building a PC will be the death of me, even though i know a fair amount about computers in general, and i seem to be good with them.
This has led me to be undecided, I have the money needed, and I just wanted a second opinion. Is my dad right? Is it really that difficult?

The specs I want to use:

Asus P5N-D mobo
Intel Q6600
2GB OCZ Memory
20X DVD/CD Drive
250gb, 7200rpm HDD
XFX 8600 GT
Artic Power 700w PSU
Case? (need suggestions for case for this spec)
and was going to get some fans etc.

Is this spec compatible, my parents think that I will get it all together and it wont work. Is this true? are my specs compatible with eachother? could anyone point out anything important I need to consider when buying parts, and also building it? And are there any suggestions about better combinations, becuause if it ends up not working or something, I'm up s**t creek.

Thanks alot :D

Building a computer isnt hard at all. I was in your shoes when I was 16 also. Heres the most recent guide for building a comp. If you dont mind, could you post links to all of your components, and I'll take a look at them for you. Building a comp is pretty much like a lego set with electricity.

I would definitely build a computer over buying one, you can save money and use better quality components. Once you've built it, you have such a pride for your computer, its pretty awesome, especially when you start gaming on it, sickkk. Also, tell me what kind of budget you're working with, and that'll help a lot.

Its like anything else. If you get good parts, they are all compatible, no DOA parts. Windows installs fine. (no problem) You get a DOA part and it wont fire up and you dont have spare parts to change out, or dont know enough to make a calculated guess to what it is. (it can become a pain). That said 95% of the time, if you get the right parts, hook it up right you should have no problem at all.

As far as the parts. A 700W P/S is pretty much overkill for a 8600GT. Get a good quality 500/550W P/S, upgrade to atleast a 9600GT/9800GT/3870. And you can get 500gb harddrives just for a few more bucks than a 250gb.

Nah! It's easy! I'm not sure how much experience you've had with computers, but I'd say that if you came up with that build yourself you'll have no trouble building one. If you have an old computer try tearing it apart (maybe tearing is a bad word... disassemble it) and build it again.

The only reason I can see that it wouldn't work is that the parts come DOA, and if you order from Newegg (I highly recommend it) you shouldn't have much trouble getting replacements.

Yeah, as stranglehold said, that is and old GPU and a really powerful PSU.

A few things to consider....many Asus motherboards don't run that well with OCZ RAM. I am a member of the Asus forum and see it almost everyday. Go the Asus forum and check what is working for people that have the same motherboard you want. You will see hundreds of posts about Asus+OCZ= :(

4GB of Corsair for $25 after rebate

The power supply...Artic Power...I tried to do some research about it but could not even find the company website. My personal feeling is it might be a bad idea to buy it. You can get a great name brand power supply for a good price that you know has a good warranty and RMA service.

COOLER MASTER eXtreme 500W for $45 and $25 after rebate!

EDIT: Sorry I did not see you were from the UK....was that up there when you first posted? I guess Newegg is a no go for you. Any way...still shop around and look for free shipping and rebates.

Just say if you need more links but i dont know which HDD etc to get yet. And what kind of performance would i be getting on say ... crysis?

for a smart looking case that has good airflow (keep your quad happy) and isnt extremely expensive, go for the antec 300, its only about 40 quid here in the UK. i have one and im not being the slightest bit bias when i say it is probably the best case in that price range :)

also i would strongly reccomend an after market processor cooler, the intel stock fan is good for nothing except making your comp sound like a jumbo jet lol :)

Try and get a PSU from a brand like Rosewill or Cooler Master (I use Rosewill and have head a lot of good things about Cooler Master.)

I just noticed that you're from the UK, so unfortunately newegg isn't an option (US and Canada only.) Where are people supposed to buy computer stuff in the UK?

Also, I've heard good things about Antec cases... you may want to look into them.

With what you have here, you could definitely play crysis on medium settings solid. you could probably even get away with having a mix of medium and high setting, though with a lower framerate. I would upgrade that grapics card for sure though. That will help a lot with crysis, and give your computer more longevity before you have to upgrade again.

Check out some of these cards, I think they are probably in you price range, and you will be able to play crysis looking really nice, with some pretty good framerates. Not necessarly all high or extreme settings, but really close.

Also take into consideration what is being said about ocz memory and asus boards, and what others have said about your power supply. That case looks pretty cool. Just keep in mind, things are going to be more cramped in a mid size tower, whereas with full towers you have a lot more room to work, but they obviouslytake up more room once you're done. Full towers generally offer better airflow as well (keeps your components cooler)

also, i'd get 4GB of ram, it only costs about 30% more compared to same brand 2GB memory.

i just noticed you live in the UK, order everything from ebuyer, their return policy wont ever let you down if you get anything DOA :)

for hard disk go for the WD5000aaks 500 GB ( search 124228 on ebuyer ) and to keep crysis happy go for a 9600GT or somthing
