Urgent help required : Bad noise coming from CPU fan

I have this really strange noise coming from my CPU fan, sounds a bit like a diesel idling :P Can anyone tell me what has gone on, whether my fan is on its last legs or anything? There is nothing catching the fan blades, and the blades are jumping around rather significantly. I uploaded a video so you can hear what it sounds like.

Can anyone please help me? Don't want to kill my CPU!

That is what im thinking, that or the bearings have gone? Really hoping it can push on another few weeks though, then ill be able to afford a new cooler. Temperatures have not changed, so I am thinking it may be o.k to last for another 2 to 3 weeks.

If you're sure nothing is hitting the fan blade then the fan bearing is probably about to give out. Keep a close eye on the temperature, especially if the sound stops.

Positive nothing is hitting the blades, I turned the PC off, and the fan is really stiff to move, and its a jerky move, not a smooth turning fan at all.

Got temperature gauge going right now. Perhaps its wise to get a AC Freezer Pro 7 Rev 2? I can afford that.

Edit: I have noticed temperatures on idle are 9 to 10C higher than they originally were when I overclocked.... Same ambient temperature... that does not sound, or look good at all!

Yeah then it's definitely a dead bearing. If you have an extra fan you can always trying jerry rigging it ontop of your heatsink until you can buy a replacement unit.

That's a good idea, I do have a 120mm fan sitting in my drawers. Does anyone know whether the Arctic cooling freezer pro 7 rev 2 will work on a Q9450 at 3.2? Im happy with temperatures upto 70C (at 100% load). I can get one here for Wednesday.

:good::good: I have it and I love it, very quiet (see sig) I would suggest it to anyone.

The Pro 7 rev 2 is compatible with Core i7, i5, Socket 775 (which you have), AM3, AM2+, AM2, and 979.

oh right, fair enough, just other peeps have said just keep an eye on the temp, i'd switch the computer off if it start getting to 60-65c just to be safe. dont quote me on it but i think intel chips max temp is something like 72-74c. can someone correct me if thats wrong please.

I believe the 45nm quad cores can handle up to 90C (I was told by a professional overclocker), if its 74, and I was comfortable running at 72 during a prime 95, ill be angry, lol

Got the new cooler, CPU runs cooler also! Which is an added bonus, quiet and works fantastic. Thanks for everyone's help :good::good:
