USB 2.0 not working

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this...so, sorry in advance.

I had to buy a new motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186061

Because my old one was fried. So when I put everything back together...and about 1 week later, I try to use my pendrive on the back USB's. I get a little window that pops up and says "this device can perform faster in a 2.0 USB slot". The drivers that came with the MOBO do not work for XP. I've tryed downloading 2.0 drivers, but to no avail.... none of them work...

help ? :(

Do you have windows XP service pack 2? Windows sp2 comes with USB 2.0 support. If you dont have service pack 2, USB 2.0 will not be supported on your computer, and USB 2.0 ports will only work at USB 1.0 speeds.

Have you tried all USB ports and checked the connections to the board? If a wire is misconnected on a block you lose two ports there.

How old is the pendrive?

Flash memory has a limited number of writes. When you hit that limit, the flash memory starts to degrade and become unusable.

When you hit that limit with a pendrive or thumbdrive, sometimes an USB 2.0 machine will see the drive as USB 1.1. An USB 1.1 machine will recognize that there is a device there, but won't be able to access it.

My recommendation is to back up everything you have on the pendrive now... if I am wrong, then at least you have a current backup against future happenings. If I am right, then at least you still have the data.

When the pendrive dies, try contacting the manufacturer and see if they will replace it under warranty. I know for a fact that Kingston does.

I've checked all the ports and Windows says there are NO USB 2.0 ports on this computer. I really doubt its the pendrive, because it still works good on all the other computers I've tryed it in...

Ohya, I have another little problem. My mouse is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting. And yes.. I hear that stupid noise every time too...
(Its a USB mouse btw....)

i have that same board and that same problem with my usb ports. the driver for the usb 2.0 didnt work but i think i was able to use them anyway without installing the driver..i cant remember its been a long time

Sometimes you can grab a set of generic drivers if not Linux drivers to get things working where the usual WIN 9X-ME, NT, XP drivers won't. That was one thought to pass along here. However an interesting post was made regarding that make and model board on a 98SE system that could be useful to look over. Here's part of that.

I just setup a new Foxconn 748K7AA board with 98SE. It's a SiS 748 board. You're right. For an unexplained reason the USB 2.0 installer sets up autoexec to run that nousb file on every boot, which of course just disables Windows detection of the USB 2.0 hardware.

I'm sneaky when it comes to 98SE though. We all must be, in these days when we seem to be forced, kicking and screaming, into running XP or to miss out on all the neat stuff.

Here's how I enabled it.

Don't install USB 2.0 from the cd. If you already did, delete the nousb file in the Windows folder and the associated entry in autoexec and reboot.

You should have that question marked Universal Serial Bus device in device manager back.

Update the driver to the USB 2.0 driver in the Windows2000 folder on the cd (browse to it). You'll now have the Microsoft Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller.

As far as I can tell I have USB 2.0. My scanner is a high speed USB device that I remember complained when I installed it to a USB 1.1 port on my Asus A7V333, suggesting I use a detected USB 2.0 port instead. It isn't complaining on this board and is working fine, as is my Thrustmaster USB 2.0 force feedback gamepad." http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t69192.html

UPDATE: I just went into the device manager/USB controllers... uninstalled 2 of them...and now it works  YAYAYAY....USB 2.0!!wooohoo

Thanks people!
