I recently purchased a Creative I/O USB 2.0 to IDE Adapter Cable. I've read many reviews saying that these cables are just plug and play. But yet I can't seem to get mine working? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Harddrive i'm trying to connect is a Maxor 13.5gb (Model # 51369u3) to my laptop running Windows XP Pro

Did you set the jumper on the hard drive to master?

That would be my first guess, too. Is this a work laptop with network drive mappings? Sometimes the network drive mappings will overwrite the one windows assigned your drive. We run into that problem here at work. I'd go to computer manager disk management and see if your drive shows up there. If it does, check to see if the drive letter is being used by something else and change the drive letter for your HD. If not, I'd go to hardware manager and see if the correct drivers are installed. You should see something under USB pop up when you install the device and you should see the exact hard drive model appear under hard drives. The first time you install the device, you should install the drivers on the cd provided... even if it says plug and play.

It shows up under disk managment everyother time I plug it in. And when it does show up it sometimes shows up as a cd-rom drive, while other times it shows that its a hard drive that needs to be initialized. I have tryed running the drivers disk but nothing really installed. I then tryed to 'explore' the disk, just to find a bunch of files not really knowing which ones I need.

How is this drive being powered?

Did you try checking the drive to see if it's set up for master. Just plugging it into the Master IDE cable doesn't make it a master drive. There are pin settings on the drive itself that need to be set correctly. Go to Maxtor's website and you can check to see what the correct jumper setting are if they're not shown on the drive itself.

I've also had some issues with external USB hard drives being recognized. A lot of times I had to uninstall the drivers and manually install the correct drivers from the cd provided.

I did set the jumpers to master. As for the driver install, it states in the instructions that for Windowns XP no additional drivers are needed. However I do have the driver disk that is filled with different files, any tips on to which one I may need to install?

This is what Tech Support send back to me in reguards to my problems....
"Dear Customer,
We apologize for not replying the email. Usually, the hard drive needed to be formatted before connecting to the USB cable. If you still have any question, feel free to contact us anytime. Thank you."
I thought that you could pull existing data from any hard drive? Maybe I'm wrong
