So you can buy adapter cards to have usb 3.0 slots on your pc, but, does any usb device you plug into them transfer at 3.0 speeds? or would you have to go buy new devices that were compatible? I know that usb 3.0 is backwards compatible, but I want the 5gb per second speed.
 
No you need USB 3.0 specific devices. The thing with USB 3.0 is they come with 2 extra channels that allow for faster data transfer. They also read and write data simultaneously. The only USB 3 compatible peripheral to my knowledge is the Seagate free agent go flex HDD family. They come standard with a USB 2.0 cable but you can purchase the USB 3.0 cable separately.
