Go into device manager and uninstall all usb ports. Reboot and let windows reinstall them and see if that fixes the issue. If not, post back.

All usb ports ? The host controllers realtek usb card reader (unknown device ipod) and all the Root hubs ?

oops, didn't even realize this was in the laptops section. I'm not sure what the next step would be, never came across that kind of a problem before. What about any other usb devices, do they work properly?

All other usb devices work properly. But it cant be the cable as another usb to jac cable had the same problem.

The ipod charges via the same usb on a ps3 but on the laptop it doesn't even do that also it works on a mates xp computer but not on my brothers vista.

iPod

It sounds more like an OS problem to me, especially after searching the problem. Seems that a lot of people have this issue, usually due to driver problems or other software.

Which iPod are you using?

Vista has always been pretty temperamental towards ext devices, so you may want to expect problems like this in the future.

When you plug the device in do you get a message asking about drivers? Have you installed any new programs recently? Did your iPod work before they were installed?

How many USB devices are you using? You may be using too many for the iPod to work properly. If you use a lot of the USB's on your laptop, unplug a few devices and then retry your iPod. Does it work now?

Have you tried any other devices in the USB slot? If other devices dont work may be a hardware issue with the socket. (eg: broken, loose wiring, dirty, etc...).

Also, are you having any other problems with your computer? Have you ever dropped it or has it ever been banged around? Also consider who you got the computer from, do you think they were careful with it?

When was the last time you restarted your laptop? That can help in certain cases.

Ipod Shuffle

When plugged in no questions are asked about drivers. Drivers are automatically installed as unknown device no new programs either

All usb devices work apart from this one and another ipod usb.

Have tried many different usb slots to no avail also only have the ipod plugged in no other usb devices

No problems with my laptop all is running nice and smoothly have tried restarting the laptop as well still doesn't help.

A question first.

Are you using a genuine copy of Vista?

If you are using a pirated copy of windows, that can definitely be a problem. The resolution in this case would be to buy a genuine copy of windows: Xp, Vista or 7 and install it. Then re-try your iPod.

To verify if you have a genuine copy of Vista:

"To check the Vista activation status is easy. Users can simply right click on “Computer” on “Start Menu”, and then click on “Properties” on the right click context menu. On “View basic information about your computer” page, scroll down to bottom, and Windows activation status is listed under “Windows activation” status."

If your copy is genuine and activated, it will look something like this:

But if your copy of windows is genuine then it may be Apple software thats making this problem. For a solution to your iPod/Apple device go here for the Apple troubleshooting page. This site goes much more in depth that I can go. Especially since it entails a lot of steps that would take me a long time to go through here.

Let us know if this site is helpful. Or if you dont feel like messing with all this, put the computer in the shop and let them do it. I know I wouldn't have time to mess with all of it just for music. But I'm in college, and don't have much time for anything, ha ha ha!

Its your call...
