USB devices cutting out

Hey,

I'm having a few problems with my usb devices.

At first it was my USB wireless ariel that used to disconnect & cut out for no reason at all. Sometime just disconnecting it from the computer & then reconnecting it would solve the problem. But other times i might have to shut down & restart the system.

then it started happening to my hard drive (i store all my music on it). I would have itunes open, but it would not be able to locate the files.

Finally it has started to happen with my ipod too. Various reasons would pop up for it. Like it hadn't been recognized or sometimes nothing at all.

Currently i have a 4 port USB hub connected to one of the back USB ports, with just my HD & printer (which is never switched on) connected to that.

In the other port at the back i have the wireless ariel connected.

Finally in the two ports at the front i would occasionally have my ipod in one & my screenplay HD in the other, but again i don't use it too often on the PC.

I'm finding that the fan is running at a high speed a lot of the time too. but when i Ctrl-Alt-Del to check the CPU & Memory usage i find that they are relatively low & there are no strange processes running in the background either.

I realize that the age of my pc (5 years old this april) could be a factor in the reasons for this.

Thanks for your help

What is the operating system??? At the moment i am assuming XP, correct???
With the USB hub, is it a powered USB hub???
Are the devices fine without going through the hub??? or do you still have issues???

Being the age of the computer, it is possible, that this is a sign that hardware is starting to fail... it could be the motherboard, or the power supply - who knows.

Yes the operating system is XP. As ive said, the only devices that run through the hub are the printer & the Hard drive. But its not just the devices that run through hub that have problems. The ariel, for example, is plugged directly into the PC.

No its not a powered hub.
