USB Drives

can somebody explain or link me to an article that describes what the difference is in 1.0, 2.0. 3.0 etc USB drives?

im not sure what the differences are, i have a 3.0 that seems to work with any computer i have tried it on, im looking at buying a larger capacity USB drive and i want to make sure it will work on all computers/PCs

The difference is mainly transfer speed, all usb standards are backwards compatible, but will be limited by the slowest part of the connection.

I.E. if you connect a usb 3.0 flash drive to a usb 3.0 port you will get full usb 3.0 performance.

But if you connect a usb 3.0 flash drive to a usb 2.0 port you will only get usb 2.0 performance and vice versa.

thanks, i appreciate it,

so what im gathering from this is, any USB drive will function in any USB port?......the only factor will be the transfer speed?

As stated, those are just USB revisions. Each USB revision is built to be inter-operable with other revisions, but you may exhibit limitations such as a reduced transfer rate when using a USB 3.0 stick in a USB 2.0 port.
