can PCs boot from usb devices? (i.e. ipod) if i remove my hard drive can i boot from an os install disc and force it to install (and then boot) to an external hd (ipod)?? could the ipod hd handle a PC os??

I can boot to a USB external hard drive because my MOBO BIOS has the option to do so.
I'm not sure if it can boot to an ipod, have never tried it since I do not have an ipod.
