Besides going to the Device Manager by right clicking on the MyComputer icon or going to the System icon in the Control Panel to open that up to get to the DM that way you would first look to see if there any yellow exclaimation marks seen or items missing under the usb devices and controllers section there. If you installed Windows and forgot the mother board cd to install the drivers needed for the usb controllers or they got knocked out by something Windows could then easily fail to detect any devices later connected to the ports.

The worst result is finding a board problem where the usb ports no longer will work. That is ruled out by seeing your IPod charge up there. But if you don't find any yellow marks in the device manager try right clicking on the items to see any have somehow been disabled or indicate a problem. You can also try the update driver option to have Windows search for updated drivers.

Is there any notification of it being plugged in? I know sometimes I've plugged devices in, gotten the beep, but then an error in the task bar... Sometimes a simple restart will correct this, but I assume you've already tried this. I also assume you have tried other devices in the USB ports?

Have you tried any other USB2.0 devices on your computer? Do you have all the latest drivers loaded?(though you usally don't need anything for USB anymore...)

if your running xp, almost all devices will be plug and play. try get your hand on the drivers for the sub controllers. that should fix the problem. if you install them and it still doesnt work, maybe your ports are dead.

Since the IPod charged up easily the one other place to look would be at the bios settings themselves. Depending on make and model there is usually three or four items that can enable or disabled regarding the controllers themselves. I'm starting to wonder if you need a bios update to correct this if you haven't already grabbed the latest. If you recently updated and are now seeing this the other thought is a possible bad flash where you need to download a fresh copy to reflash again in order to correct this. The last item regarding a board problem can't be ruled out even though the current is there. The two things to really look at now are the DM and bios settings themselves. Something found there will give you something to work with. At least those can be corrected.

Bios

I had the exact problem and this is my solution. I heard something on other forums about messing around with the USB options in the BIOS. So enter the bios setup and disable the usb options and then re-enable them. Another way is to disable USB support and re-enable it. GOOD LUCK!
