USB Port issues

going on 2 years ago now i built a desktop through new egg. i built it with the guidance of an expert, but when i ran it up and tried to plug in more than one external hard-drive in at a time(flash and my external) into the front USB ports, neither one would sync with the computer. now both ports work individually, but not at the same time. could this be a wiring problem, or software, or hardware?

Check to see if both usb ports are sharing the same header pins as it should be wire to 8 pins not 4 pins.
If it goes to 4 pins that is your problem.
Each port must be wired to 4 pins.
