my usb storage will not work properly. Here are the symptoms
1. USB storage will not show in My Computer.
I HAVE TRIED GOING TO DISK MANAGEMENT AND ASSIGNING A DRIVE LETTER. (putting this in bold cuz thats what everyone else told me to do to fix the problem).
2. USB will not show in My Computer when i go to Start-> My Computer, but will show when i go to it through a program ie Microsoft Word (after i do the above step and assign a drive letter, that is).
3. When i take the usb out and then plug it back in, it shows up in disk management but has no drive letter again (but the drive letter i assigned earlier is not available. ie if i assigned a drive letter E and then take the usb out and plug it back in, E is not available ne more)
4. I can store data and view the files through programs like microsoft word. (that is after i do step 1)
4. Everything else works fine. I can connect my printer, and mp3 and transfer songs there and stuff.

What OS and service packs do you have?
There is this problem with Windows in some if it's early stages that suspends the usb drivers for some reasons such as: usb drives being removed, haven't been used for too long, and other reasons.

One thing you can try is to disable, then reenable your usb ports via Device Manager. (Right click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware tab>Device Manager)

If it doesn't work, then next thing would be to do a registry entry. You will have to open up regedit. This is done by going to START>RUN and typing in regedit. Once there, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB

If you don't see DisableSelectiveSuspend on the right side, you will have to create a new DWORD and called DisableSelectiveSuspend if it isn't already there. If it is, double click on it and put 1 in the entry. This will disable the suspend on usb ports. Try and restart to see if it has worked. If it wasn't there and you created it, do the same thing; put 1 in it.

If not, post back and we can see if there are other solutions.
