USB Thumb Drive – Won’t Work on Older PC?

Hi there!

I have a JumpDrive (USB Thumb Drive)…however, I’m having some problems using it on certain computers.


The JumpDrive works well with my Dell Laptop (Year: 2004, Windows XP), however, it does not work well on my older PC (Year: 2000, Windows98).


Does anyone know why this is happening?


What can I do to fix the problem?

"does not work well" isn't a very concrete error-description.

Did you find some Windows 98 drivers or have there been some on a CD that eventually came along with the JumpDrive?

If you managed to install the drivers: What exactly does not work well with the JumpDrive on your older computer?

My assumption so far: The problem is Windows 98 itself...

The Thumb Drive did not come with a CD. It loads its (small) software on the PC when plugged in to the USB slot (as it did when I inserted it in to by Dell 600m Inspiron Laptop).

Plain and simple: My older PC doesn’t see my Thumb Drive.

It loads its (small) software on the PC when plugged in to the USB slot (as it did when I inserted it in to by Dell 600m Inspiron Laptop).

They do not do this, or have have yet to see them do so. What you probably saw was windows loading some generic drivers for it. Check the packing, usally, if they don't have a CD, they have links to where you can download drivers for older OS's.

Windows 98 is very old, so nearly every USB device needs some extra drivers in order to work properly. If the manufacturers didn't put an extra CD to the drive, you simply have to look on the manufacturer's homepage for Windows 98 drivers.

If you can't find adequate drivers on whose homepage, you can try to contact their support (in case there is actually one). Without these drivers I don't see a chance to make this device working on Windows 98. :/

Good idea…I’ll do this…

Learned a lot in this post…I thought my Thumb Drive not working had to do with the old USB ports

You also need to remember that winxp is ALL plug and play (plug somthing in and winxo finds a workable driver) but win98 is not. You need to manually load almost all drivers (except cdrom keyboard monitor etc) Well just my 2 cent..

cant you see that it says works from windows 98 SE, up to winXP in the system requierments on all usb thumdrives.
