USB to IDE cable

Today I bought a usb to ide cable and I am having trouble getting the drivers to work. I have win98 and there are drivers for it on the cd but in the system config when the cpu serches for drivers none are found. Any help would be great.
 
Sometimes windows can be a pain when it searches for other drivers... Try using the advanced search and directing it to the folder that contains the drivers.

I know what you mean and I tried that a few times and still nothing. I followed all the directions for the thing(limited i might say) and it still says no driver found. hmmmmmmm.
 
That could be just because 98 in genreal doesn't have the best USB drivers... First Edition couldn't be that great, but I don't think it would really matter.

Other than trying other USB ports, you can also sort of force the driver to install. I assume that would be some sort of storage device... You can go though COntrol Pannel, then Add/Remove hardware, then go though the add hardware wizard. I don't remember the exact steps, but you want to go where you see a list of items to select from(like display addaptors and such, NOT things already installed on your computer) After that you should get a list of items. Choose have disk and find your drivers. Sometimes this will work, or sometimes it won't find anything.

I guess you could also try and get new drivers for your USB... But then again, windows 98 just plain isn't good with drivers. One of my old computers that had 98 on it, the front USB port would just die for no reason and seemingly nothing could get it working again untill I reloaded the machine! It was fine with Windows 2000 on it...

So I tried what the last post said and still nothing. I am about ready to take the thing back but i want it to use it with a hardrive for backing up. I have found that the usb to ide is the best option for me so i really would like this to work. I just cant beleive that windows98 is so bad about this. Now the post said that they had upgraded to win2000, The machine i am doing this on is a compaq, would win2000 or even win98se work on here?
 
One thought as I'm personally out of ideas, the harddrive IS powered up, right? All should be detected even without the HD spinning, but I just wnated to be sure.

And just because your system's a compaq doesn't tell me anything about it's actual specs. My guess is that it would run 2000, 98se for sure(no requirement differences between 98 and 98se) You need a Pentium 166 for 2000 if I remember correctly, and 32M RAM.

Thank though, i hat it when its something stupid, but this time it think windows is goofed up. So where do i get an upgrade cd for win98se or 2000, question might not fit here but any direction would be great.
 
if you have a fairly new motherboard it might offer some options in the bios for usb legacy support or something like that... try enabling the options that allow for storage devices, see if that works
 
I am a rookie...

I am a rookie at bios so a little walk through would be nice if you dont mind. I really would like this to work and if i learn something in the process that would be great.
 
i take it you know how to get into the bios (just look for the "hit whatever to enter setup)... it would usually be in the section called integrated peripherals... then you're looking for something to do with usb legacy support or something similar. i cant be 100% sure cos i cant be bothered to check my bios and i've just come home after drinking cider lol

Isn't legacy support usally for USB keyboards? That or it could be for USB 1.1, but I feel quite sure that device is 2.0

I am fairly confident that my usb to ide cable does not work with win 98, I will bite the bullet and keep it becasue i plan on getting a machine with winxp on it in the next few months, I jsut really had hoped that it ould be an easy install and be able to back up all my machines. SO unless anyone else has any ideas i think i might have hit a road block.
 
you could do what he ssaid, just stick it in your computer. And just to clarify, this is a type of external enclosure right? Its not just a cable with an IDE port at one end, and a USB at another right?

This is what I assumed was being talked about. Now, I could be wrong, but most things like this will work without powering the drive, so even if that was forgotten, it should at least be detected by windows...
 
that is the cable that i have.

I could just put it into the computer but i eventuall would like to just plug the cable into a usb and then backup or transfer files. This way i would not have to remove the case everytime to do just what i said. So for now i guess I could jsut remove the case but i really like the ease of just plug and play with the usb.
