usb to ide converter

Why not just buy one of those they will cost about the same, even if they dont it saves you taking the time to build it yourself

Not really ... you can find junked IDE cables in dumpsters (free) and grab a USB cable for like $5 ...... course that requires a bit of wiring knowledge though.

For the cost of USB/IDE adaptors you should consider and enclosure ... casing protects the drive and also helps with the cooling :)
 
I like the way you put (free) after mentioned getting something out the dump.

Yeah but if it's in the trash it might not work and be really shoddy.

Also if you are caught diving in dumpsters then you might get arrested and have to pay a lot more to get out of jail then it would just to buy one. :D

It's true man. Universities and stuff junk stuff all the time. Hell I have 8 monitors i bought at their junk sales for like $5 :P (granted 5 of them work but thats better than none). Even if you dont, an IDE cable is like $2
