USB to SATA adapter

OK so I recently bought this USB to SATA adapter to hook my HDD into my mom's laptop. This is the link to the actual product:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186020

Now I just hooked it up, but I can't get to the drive to read or write or anything. Now my question is...does any1 have one of these or one like it? Because I was under the impression it was plug and go...but its not working.

In my device manager I can see that there is a USB drive but its not in My Computer or anywhere so I can access it.

Any1 have any ideas to help me out?

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

See if you can't format and partition the drive from there, assuming it's a brand new drive you're trying to use.

Well the drive isnt new...its the drive I have in my desktop...I'm just trying to hook it into my mom's laptop to get data to and from it

Are you sure that the power cable is connected to the drive as well? Do you hear the drive spin-up when it's connected? Is anything being displayed in disk management for the drive?

Well I would think the problem would be your drive or the power supply. The drive should spin up when power is connected, regardless if a data cable is connected. Do you have a desktop that you could try the drive in?

The drive does work fine in my desktop...I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the adapter

The adapter has a link light tho...and the laptop recognizes that there is a device attached but it doesnt recognize that the device has an HDD attached
