Usb & usb 2

I am trying to back up a drive on my computer but having problems with a new external hdd to do this. My computer has 2 basic USB's on the front and I have previously installed a 4 way USB 2 hub on the motherboard giving me 4 connections on the back.
I have used these USB 2 connections to download pictures from my camera and also to operate my sat nav with no problems.
The external hdd has been partitioned and formatted but when I plug it in to the USB 2 and switch it on the computer freezes and wont let me access computer management or disk management. I can access other items.
If I plug the ext drive into the front USB I can then carry out back up but slowly. I am sure the ext hdd is good because I partitioned and formatted it inside the computer. I thought the enclosure could be the problem but it works ok on the front USB. Sorry if this is not too clear, can anyone throw some light on this? Any help appreciated. firefrost.

Are you having problems with these same USB ports with different devices? Try and plug a flash drive or another device into them.

2048, As i said in my post, the USB 2 port works normally when I plug in my camera or sat nav but when I plug in and switch on my ext drive the mouse freezes.
OMEGA, I may be using the wrong terminology. 6 months ago I bought a 4 outlet USB 2 PCI card and installed into a slot in the motherboard. The problem is I can use the ext back up drive on the front USB but not on the new back USB 2's. I can use the USB 2'S to work the sat nav and digital camera. thanks for the replies, firefrost.
