USB WIFI Adaptor

Hi! I currently connect to the internet through a router with a wired connection. I'm thinking of setting up a wifi connection, since I got a deal on a new router that has wifi capabilities. I've been looking at wifi adaptors, and the usb type is a lot cheaper. However, most of them seem to be made for laptops. Is there a usb wifi adaptor for a desktop computer? If so, what's a good recommendation for one? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How far away will you be from the router? I can probably recommend something when you give the answer to that question.

Yeah, but I'm saying you'll get better reception with the adapter I linked to. I would rather have better reception then a usb adapter that would get bad signal.

ah I see. In that case definitely get a PCI adapter. I didn't carefully read the first post and didn't see that price was the issue. i was just assuming that he didn't have any open PCI slots left :P.

Thanks for the responses. John, one of the computers will be 2 floors away from the router---I guess about 30 feet. Thanks.

Well since you are 2 floors away from the router, i'm not sure how good of a signal you would get with the one I linked you too but it will be better than any usb device. You might have to end up getting wireless repeater or hooking it back up using the ethernet cable.

So what you're saying is that a usb wifi adaptor isn't very good, so to receive a better signal I should go with a pci card? Any recommendations on for a pci card? Thanks.

The one I linked you to is very good but I don't know how well it will work with being 2 floors away from the router. But it will be the best thing for you to get. I used one at a clients house using a linksys router that was 1 floor directly below the computer and it had excellent signal.

Thanks for the response, John. I'm looking at a great deal on a linksys wmp600n dual band router---less than half price including shipping. The only thing I don't understand about a review I read is that the router should support the draft n 2.0 standard. The router I have is a linksys wrt54gr and I can't find anything in the documentation about standards. Will I have any problems with this setup? Thanks.

You will get better reception with a router that has external antennaes like the one you already have. Unless the N router you are looking at has external antennaes then keep the one you have.
