USB will not recognise Canon PIXMA

Have a Canon PIXMA MP800 and will I try and install software windows will not recognize the printer.
I am connecting via USB, have tried to install drivers several times without luck. Also tried various know good USB ports, windows XP SP3.

Any ideas???

Did you install the software/drivers before plugging the printers USB into a port ?

Yes I did initially, then I uninstalled and tried to connected printer and let window do it's thing.
Same outcome.
