Is a usb wireless adapter slower than a pcmcia or pci adapter? Because I have a laptop with an internal wireless adapter, a desktop with a usb wireless adapter, and a desktop with a wired connection. I downloaded a broadband speed test and ran it on all the computers. The wired desktop and the wireless laptop had the same speed, but the desktop with usb adapter had 1/3 the speed. So, is there any explanation for this?
P.S. the network is 802.11g
 
Depends, USB2.0 has a real-world bandwidth of around 25MBps, however if you are using USB1.1 or USB1.0, the speed will be severely crippled, although judging from your sig thats not the case.

Does the desktop with the USB adapter show a strong signal strength? How about the other wireless computer? And are both PC's being tested from the same location?
 
Do a test either downloading from the same server and see what kind of average transfer speed you get, or send a file from various PC's on your network and see how slow it's actually going.
 
I have a USB 1 port on my lappy.Any reasonable way to change that over to USB 2?Maybe a adapter I can drill a hole in the side of the case and run it to the motherboard?

If you only have USB 1.1 slots, then your motherboard isn't USB 2.0 compatible, it's not the actual port itself.

What you can do though is buy a add-on card that will add USB 2.0 ports.
