Use internal Sata DVD drive as external?

The way my desk is organized right now I have my tower above my monitor on a shelf which works out well except it is difficult to get to my dvd drive without standing up and reaching around some stuff to open and access it.

Anyway, is there a cable I could get to power the drive externally if I wanted to leave it set on the counter where my keyboard and mouse are? I know I can probably get a long Sata cable to run up to the board, but I dont want to have to run two cables especially one from the PSU.

Why not just buy an external seagate free agent xtreme esata drive?

I just grabbed one,,,(my first ever external..and it's friggin fast)

Doh...

just realized you said dvd drive..

but you can get an external dvd too..

It will be slower, but its 60mb/s which should not slow you down much.

And if its a newer motherboard, most will allow booting to usb cd drives
