Used/free space help

When I look through the C drive, I only have 3 folders in it: Documents and Setting which has 2.00 GB, Program Files that has 781 MB, and WINDOWS that has 1.06 GB. My folders only show a total of about 3.85 GB but when I view the prporties of my C drive it was 28.3 GB are being used.

Does anyone know what all the used space that doesn't show up in the C drive could actually be? How to fix it? Any help or information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ZEJUX

Since you can see only these 3 folders, then you can't see the hidden files on your C drive. For sure, the extra space you are asking about are taken through hidden files and folders.

To view hidden files and folders, follow the following:

1. Click Tools from the menu at the top
2. Choose Folder Options
3. Choose the View Tab
4. Choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from the middle of the box
5. Click ok

You will be able to see all the hidden files and folders on your hard disk. Go check your C drive now and see the surprise :D

~20GB in hidden files doesn't sound right but it's a better solution then anything I can think of right now :)

Well, they might not be all hidden files or folders, I missed something :D

ZEJUX, when you arrive at the box you are going to enable the hidden files and folders, you will find a check box saying "Hide protected Operating System Files [Recommended]", Uncheck it, and apply the changes.

This will show you the System Volume Information Folder, you will find this folder really huge in size.

This is provided that you are using Win XP :D

It did show some more but nowhere near 25 GB worth, not even 5 GB worth, probably only about 2.

Also, is it safe to delete the compressed files inside the ARCHIVE folder inside the _RESTORE folder?

Last thing, it says the System Volume Information folder is empty and when I try to open it, it says "Access is denied". Any help on how I could access this folder?

It wont have anywhere near 20GB in it, you don't want to mess around with System Volume Information, (mine has about 200mb)

To get in adjust the security premissions so that your account has access (I think by default only SYSTEM can get in)

Try scan disk and defragment for your C partition then, this might fix the problem. Sometime windows can't just see the correct used/free space but it does after you scan disk and defrag the partition.

1) Are there multiple acounts on the computer?
2) You mentioned the folders on the C drive, but how many files are on just the C:\ directory?
3) If you want you could check how many files are in each of the three folders, then check how many files there are total on the C drive; check how many missing files there are. If there isn't too many try a search for files >100 MB or something... worth a try if nothing else works.

i'm not sure what's the real problem is, but
i think the system restore option is taking these space of drive C:. you should turn off system restore.
to turn off system restore right click on my computer > propertiese > System Restore > put check mark on the the box. then apply > ok.
