Used Hard Drive Crashes Laptop

I am using a 500GB hard drive in my laptop right now. My friend lended me his 320GB hard drive after I fixed his laptop. My goal is to install the physical hard drive (320GB one) into my current laptop and install Linux onto it.

The 320GB supposedly crashed due to a virus so he bouth a new hard drive with an OS preinstalled and I installed the new hard drive for him and kept his old one.

I created a Ubuntu installation disk and put it into my DVD drive.

The problem:
When I do replace my 500GB hard drive with the 320GB hard drive and restart my machine, my computer makes two beeps one after another repeatedly after every second. Then, five seconds later the computer shuts down. After 5 more seconds, the computer shuts down and makes those two beeps again and shuts down again.

I tried going into the BIOS settings and see if the hard drive would stop messing up but it would not even let me go into the BIOS at all without it shutting down on me within 5 seconds.

To try and solve this I reinstalled my 500GB hard drive (removed the Ubuntu installation disk) and my computer started up just fine (so obviously it is the 320 GB hard drive). I then went into my BIOS settings and changed the boot order so that the the computer will look for an OS in the DVD drive instead of the hard drive (thinking that the virus really messed up the hard drive) so that i could possibly surpass any hard drive errors.

So I reinstalled the 320GB hard drive (the one that was messing up) into my computer and I turned it on. And again, it played those same beep noises and shuts off and turns back on ever 5 seconds.

Does any body have a clue on how to fix this? Is it a virus? Is the hard drive scratched? I have googled my butt off and found nothing. But maybe that's just me. Maybe you know what the problem is or know how to lead me to a solution. Anything will help.

Thank you for your help,

It seems he has damaged the drive somehow, as even with a drive with a virus on it wouldn't give you beeps and wouldn't automatically shut down without entering windows.

Another thought for you to understand is that you can't take a hard drive with an OS already installed on it from a different machine and put it in yours and expect it to boot up as your machine has different hardware then the original system. However, this isn't causing the issue you are experiencing at the moment. It seems the hard drive is damaged somehow.

So basically the hard drive is a piece of trash now right?

My goal was to completely nuke the hard drive and install Ubuntu onto it. Not to use the OS that was already on there. But being the case where it would shut off before it boots up I can't nuke the drive.
