Used Thinkpad or new Walmart special?

I am tossed up.. I had an old t30 thinkpad that despite its pentium 4 was soldiering on great in stripped down form as a lappy to use at the fire house to surf the net... I broke the display on it however due to me accidentally throwing it across a room on a concrete floor.. the rest still works somehow...

Anyways, I'm looking for a budget replacement and my thoughts have turned to picking up a used t61 thinkpad which will be more than enough for my needs. I do have to wonder though if I would be smarter to buy a new 300 dollar c50 powered compaq or similar from walmart and having a lappy I know the history of instead of buying a core 2 duo powered thinkpad with an unknown history..

Any tips?

Thanks!

Thinkpad would be better quality. But before you buy it, test the HDD, DVD drive, and run Memtest for an hour or so. If it all passes, then go for it.

As for walmart, dont get a compaq or HP at all.

I agree. Don't get a c series either they are failures. Best buy has an acer that has a celeron in it for $280. I don't love acer but it's a better option than compaq.
