Using a 3.5mm Audio Splitter

I change my audio between speakers and headphone a lot. What I want to do is get a 3.5mm audio jack splitter (the one that has two females and one male) and just have them both plugged in at all times, however I have a few questions. Will the quality decrease? Will I need an amp? and Will a splitter damage audio hardware (I'm using my only motherboard jack) ? Thanks in advance.

Don't think the quality is gonna be reduced, but the max volume on your headset will properly take a hit.

As long as it's of semi decent quality then audio quality should be relatively unaffected. I wouldn't expect a volume drop but it is possible.
