Using a laptop as a second monitor

I'm a bit puzzled at this point. I have researched about this a lot, and have not come across any real solutions. I want to use an old laptop screen as a second monitor to my desktop. I don't want to access the laptop from the desktop monitor, I want to use the screen from the laptop as a second monitor. I have read from many sources that this is possible, I just hit a wall when it came to how. Can anyone explain this to me if it's not possible, or how I can do it if it is?

laptop screens use a different kind of connector, not a vga/dvi/hdmi which a regular computer would have connections for.

if you find an adapter, or can rewire the screen, you can get it to work. other than that, it really seems like too much work... let us know if you manage to do it.
 
My Toshiba which i don't have now because i gave to the daughter has a vga output. I could plug into my 40" sony but it always turned off the lcd. i would then use a wireless keyboard and mouse. your concept is interesting though. i run dual monitors on all the computers in the house. I doubt if you will like it if they are different sizes though.
 
@zombine210: Since I want to get rid of said laptop soon, I might just keep the lcd screen and find out how to wire it to a vga adapter or something along those lines.

@tremmor: The screen difference is 15.4" (laptop (1280x800)) vs. 21.5" (desktop 1920x1080)). I bet it will be difficult, if possible.
 
I'm not sure how to rewire one, but just as a tip: I tried to take a laptop screen out once, and while disconnecting its ribbon cables, I broke one. So much for saving that component. :( So remember: Laptop monitors' cables are delicate, DO NOT PULL ON THEM HARD!
