Using a laptop to convert wifi to ethernet

Would it be possible to connect my laptop to a wifi network, then if I took an ethernet cable and connected my laptop to another PC, the laptop turns that wifi into wired internet for the other PC?

Yeah, its called ICS(Internet Connection Sharing)

Or you could just buy a wireless card for the desktop.

If both pc's have windows 7 then here.

Just a note here. You may need to use a crossover ethernet cable instead of a regular cable in order to communicate between the 2 pc's.

What if the "pc" hooked into the laptop is actually the Internet-in port of a wifi router? Could I do that?

Stop being cheap and just buy a cheap wireless card. You can get a decent one for $25.

Just buy a WIFI card for the desktop.

I have done this with ICS. You will need a cross over cable. I made my own. If the router is plugged into the laptop ICS can share the connection as well just as if there was WIFI on the laptop.

As said earlier, the laptop would have to remain on and not in sleep mode. You'll end up burning it up. How far away would the desktop pc be from the original router?

The laptop is a a piece of crap anyways. Just tell me: CAN THIS WORK OR NOT?

I've never set it up like that but its doable. Beers, Geoff or Voyagerfan99 should be able to help you set it up.

Had the impression he was using as a repeater. If thats the case i would just buy one.

That's my plan exactly. To use this:

to create a repeater. I want to build it because I got the stuff to. Now tell me how to get everything in the diagram above to work. Thank you.

You should just be able to bridge the interfaces on the laptop.

http://windows.microsoft.com/is-is/windows/create-network-bridge#1TC=windows-7

You probably want to avoid ICS since it implements PAT and DHCP by default (similar to a router). If you bridged the interfaces then you'll just depend on the upstream router for DHCP and PAT.

After bridging the interfaces you could just think of the laptop as a fancy network switch.

Thank you it is working perfectly now. :good:
