Using a spray bottle to help with static discharge

I read that if you fill up a spray bottle with water and put in a drop of soap, then spray around the area where you will build a computer, this helps prevent static electricity. (I assume they don't mean spray the actual, physical area, but just mist up the room a little!)

I guess this makes sense with the water, but what does the drop of soap have to do with it?

well if you get 100% pure water it is not actually conductive. the drop of soap adds conductivity to it

well i build on carpet and vacuum out my pc.

my mobo and ram died... so i guess static is a problem. haha

but i dont see how this would help that much.
just make sure your touching the metal of the case.

I'm sure it would help spraying the surface under the comp and where you are standing, but i'd just touch the computer case every now and then.

the soap would add conductivity and yes if it is absolute pure H2O then its not conductive but i wouldent go on that i would just stay grounded to be safe :)

Actually I could see it helping with the humidity in the room. Higher humidity means less static being built up.

Static builds up faster and more in a dry environment. That's why in the winter when you have your furnace on, you are constantly getting shocked when ever you touch something. Warm dry air is the cause.

So using a fine spray in the ROOM will help keep static in check. What the soap has to do with it I have NO idea.

PS> I don't think you find could PURE water outside a laboratory. Even reverse osmosis or distillation does not make it pure. The average tap water has so much impurity's in it do to pipes and other things that it is very conductive
