using an ext hdd to store games for my laptop

to save hdd space on a laptop is installing the games on a ext hdd a viable option, instaed of installing it on the laptops hdd
 
yes they will be fine and work but they will only run on your laptop due to where certain system files go

really? cause I installed Age of Empires 2 on my external HD and it plays on any computer.
 
majority of programs and games will install system files and add things to the registry which will make them unplayable on other systems as they wont have these needed files. Thats not to say "all" will do that but a large portion will. Age of empires is an older game and might not require said files to be in other places
