using old hardrive as external

I have a partitioned hard drive in an old Windows 98 machine and I would like to save the data for use on a new Windows XP (HP a1330n) machine. The HP is SATA.

Can I install the old IDE drive in an external bay and use it that way? Will it be recognized by XP.

The new drive is partitioned and NTFS and the old one is FAT32. I would actually like to copy data I want onto the NTFS drive, then reformat the old one to use as backup.

Thanks for any help.

It should work fine, although I do run into some problems with XP not showing older files (Win95/Win98-FAT)in explorer... but if I go through the DOS prompt, I am usually able to find them and then copy them over.

Thank you all. Can the old hard drive be reformatted to NTFS and used for a backup after I move the old files?

Thanks for the help.
